American Airlines will debut its new express lounge concept at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT), catering to passengers “on the go” who need to move through quickly before catching a flight.
The concept marks a contrast from traditional lounges aimed at passengers seeking a place to spend time before heading to a flight’s gate. American has dubbed the new lounge Provisions by Admirals Club.
Delta Air Lines has “grab-and-go” sections within a number of traditional lounges, while United Airlines has opened “Club Fly” express lounges at Denver International Airport and Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The CLT lounge, to be opened in Concourse A next to gate A1 before the end of the summer, is “designed for speed, simplicity and convenience,” American said in a statement. “This new lounge concept ensures customers have access to a lounge space created for those with limited time looking for a quick break before continuing on their travel journey.”
The new space in the airline's CLT hub will be the first American lounge of the type. The lounge largely eschews seating and instead features high-top, standing tables. Spare furniture aims “to create an environment that supports quick visits and high-volume traffic,” according to American.
Food on offer will include sandwiches, salads, snacks and fruit. The lounge will have staff to help passengers move through the space efficiently and provide travel assistance.
“As the airline’s second-largest hub [after Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport], Charlotte plays a significant role in the connectivity of the airline,” said Ralph Lopez Massas, American’s senior vice president of CLT operations.
Access to the lounge will be available to premium loyalty program passengers, including Admirals Club members, the same as traditional American lounges. One-day passes will also be offered for $79 or 7,900 loyalty program miles.
American is operating more than 670 peak-day departures this summer from CLT to more than 170 destinations in 27 countries.
