Our Route Opportunities feature explores the latest unserved and underserved routes promoted through Routes 360, providing supporting information for airline network planners to consider and capitalize on.

Located just 8 kilometers from Montpellier in southern France, Montpellier Méditerranée Airport (MPL) serves a catchment area of 2.1 million people within a 60-minute drive. The airport is actively pursuing expanded European air connectivity to capitalize on the region’s growing business and tourism sectors.

MPL has shown strong resilience, reaching 93% of its 2019 traffic levels in 2024. The airport welcomed more than 1.7 million passengers last year, a 3% increase over 2023. This steady growth reflects its balanced mix of legacy and low-cost carriers.

Summer 2025 marks a major milestone as SWISS joins MPL’s airline portfolio with new Zurich Airport (ZRH) service launching June 27. Additional route developments include Bastia–Poretta Airport (BIA) with Transavia France, and Rennes Saint-Jacques Airport (RNS) with Volotea.

Further expanding its network, Transavia France will introduce a weekly service to Agadir beginning October 2025 and is adding additional capacity on its Tunis route.

A number of airlines are also increasing frequencies from MPL including Air France offering up to 6X-Daily flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and Discover strengthening its position with a third weekly flight to Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

Beyond its appeal as a vibrant tourist destination, MPL serves a sizable student population (75,000+) and is situated in France’s fastest-growing region, which boasts the nation’s highest rates of net migration and population growth.

With its attractive catchment area distinct from other markets, absence of slot constraints, and competitive incentive scheme, MPL offers a strategic opportunity for carriers seeking European and North African expansion. The airport has uploaded multiple unserved route opportunities on its Routes 360 profile for airlines to capitalize on.
