President Donald Trump approved an acceleration of arms shipments to Ukraine on July 14, with U.S. weapons paid for by European governments.
“We’re going to be sending them weapons and they’re going to be paying for them,” Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The package will involve air defense systems, missiles and ammunition, Rutte said, adding that some of the weapons will be funded by Germany.
“Ukraine will get its hands on massive numbers of military equipment,” Rutte said.
Details of the weapons package have not been released.
Germany Defense Minister Boris Pistorius was scheduled to meet with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth later on July 14 after this article went to press.
The White House announcement followed a turbulent two weeks within the administration over continuing weapons shipments to Ukraine. Hegseth announced a pause on weapons transfers to Ukraine two weeks ago, which reportedly caught the White House off guard.
